How did I get here? Glad you asked! I grew up an athlete - swimmer to be exact - and had a demanding workout regime that kept me on the straight and narrow. That is, until I hit college, where 5am workouts gave way to a party lifestyle that lasted a good 10+ years. I was unhealthy, overweight and depressed. I had gained 80 pounds over the years and had no idea how I was going to find the motivation to prioritize my heath. Frankly, it seemed like and impossible task. How was I supposed to exercise when I couldn't even get out of bed in the morning?!
After a series of extreme lows (e.g., embarrassing myself at weddings, engaging in an abusive relationship and the death of my dad due to alcohol abuse), I was functioning in a zombie-state - just going through the motions to get through the day.
I needed help and knew I couldn't do it alone, so I enlisted a friend to drag my butt to the gym. Little by little, I started feeling better and I eventually decided to enlist in a teacher training program at YogeOne. (This the the extremely abridged version of the journey. Stay tuned for a better play-by-play in an upcoming blog post.)
Yoga just made me feel better and allowed me to shed the negativity that consumed me. My yoga practice helped change every aspect of my life from the way I approached relationships to my diet and mood. I still work everyday to feel my best. I'm not always successful, but I do know that if I get my butt out of bed and onto the mat I will have accomplished at least one thing that day and that's a start.
